Maid Hood
They talk of the mad adventures, the heroic acts of charity, the chivalrous rescues. But the women were the best part. There was nothing more entrancing than flashes of pale skin bathing in cold water through the leaves. I bathed in falling light, the memory of their laughter washed far downstream, unless a few joined me. After all, the men had friends, and one could not be a maid forever.
They were lithe and twisting, willow whips, leather straps. They had calloused hands with rabbit's softness, muscled arms and thighs that could wrap around my body like a living bandage. I slept amidst long piles of braids and weathered skin, curled myself against breasts ripe for feeding, hips both angular and fecund.
It's true, in the end, we were married by the King. It suited us perfectly, this final fulfillment of a childhood pact. We swore to save each other. We had been lovebirds in public until the wars.
After escaping, he saved me from the disaster that could have been a marraige, seduced my husband-to-be in my clothes while I ran onto the fields and split the target in half with one fateful shot. I was always the better archer. John saved us both that day, when our switch was discovered. Raging like a mad bear, he bent the prison bars bare-handed, and carried us into the deepest reaches of the forest. We were merry companions.
He died at sixty, old at the time, and John followed soon after, weeping himself to death over that tiny fragile corpse. I buried them in secret, a mausoleum of leaves and thick vines over their graves. When I am too old to hunt, too old to shoot, I'll leave the remaining group to their pranks. I'll take my bones home to Robin and John, and lay in the leaves by their sides. And dream of women. And dream of women.
